Kelly Heylen is the curator and founder of Platform Gallery, a retail and exhibition space dedicated to craft and design in the Blue Mountains, NSW. For several years before opening Platform, Kelly was Australia’s first Creative Industries Cluster Manager, working with the local economic development agency to grow and facilitate collaboration in the region’s creative industries. Prior to this, Kelly spent more than a decade working in communications in the government and non-profit sectors.
As Cluster Manager, Kelly commissioned and managed MTNS MADE, a campaign to boost the visibility and standing of the region’s creative practitioners. It was in this role Kelly noticed a creeping monoculture in the region’s galleries, which was at odds with the tremendous talents of local makers and artisans – and so the idea of Platform Gallery was born.
Kelly is passionate about the creative industries, and loves working one on one with artists to help them develop and grow their professional and business practices. She is a creative industries business advisor with Creative + Business; writer of the popular Ask A Curator arts advice blog; and is currently completing a Master of Commerce. Kelly lives with her wife (also a writer) and their three dogs in Katoomba.
